How To

How to Survive an Invasion at Home

Home invasion is a scary thought, especially when there are kids involved. We didn't know we would have to go through this ourselves when we started our home security system installation journey. Here's the information we've gleaned so far.

  1. Don't Let Your Kids See The Attackers. Our children were upstairs sleeping when two men entered our house. We took them downstairs until they arrived at the police station. Our children were not hurt but the experience was enough for them to be traumatized.
  2. Lock up all valuables. The safe is located in our bedroom. We keep all valuables locked up. Even if someone breaks into the house, they won't be able to access it.
  3. Keep an eye out on burglars. We live in a neighborhood that has a lot of burglaries. We are always on the lookout for suspicious cars and people.
  4. Have a Backup Plan. Our family will be financially protected in case anything happens. We also have a plan that allows us to leave the United States if necessary.
  5. Be prepared. Prepare for anything. Make sure you have food, water, and other supplies ready.
  6. Call 911 First. If you find out that someone has broken into your home, call 911 immediately. It is better than waiting for authorities to knock on your door.
  7. Use Common Sense. Don't let anyone inside who doesn't belong there. Don't invite strangers over.
  8. Reach out to your neighbours or other residents in your area for assistance. If you feel unsafe call neighbors and friends. They will be able to watch your back and call the police.
  9. Keep calm and do what is instructed by police officers. Keep calm and follow the instructions of officers. Do not flee or resist arrest
  10. Take Pictures Of Any Evidence. Photograph all evidence you find during the investigation. This includes fingerprints, blood samples, and other items.
  11. Local Law Enforcement can be contacted to file a report. File a report with law enforcement even if no one was injured. This could help prevent you from being convicted of future crimes.
  12. Contact the Insurance Company Immediately. Call your insurance company immediately. Inform your insurance company about the events and request an adjuster to visit to assess the damage.
  13. You must get rid of personal belongings. Remove personal belongings before leaving the scene. It is best to take your expensive jewelry off and place it somewhere safe.
  14. Take Care of Yourself. Make sure to clean up after your self. Take out the trash and break glass and lock all doors and windows.
  15. Don't Talk About What Happened. Don't talk about anyone's past. You never know who might try to use this information against you later on.
